Committed connections

For those keen to explore the whole Jungfrau region, the transport network is brilliantly linked and the system of mountain railways and cable cars run with clockwork efficiency. One view you won’t want to miss is from the Sphinx Observatory at the UNESCO-protected Jungfraujoch. Known as the Top of Europe, you reach it via Europe's highest railway station and observation point on the famous Jungfrau Railway.

Please be aware that in early May, some transport routes, walking paths and hiking trails may be closed, especially higher up. Local business may also be closed or operating for shorter periods of time. We recommend checking timetables in advance and expecting a quieter atmosphere at this time of year.

Nightlife

Laid-back evenings

Wengen is quite a small village, making it ideal for those who prefer low-key evenings and early nights. Hotel bars are great for a few drinks after your dinner. A casual stroll around the village while the sun is setting is also a perfect way to end the day.

There's just a handful of vibrant venues in Wengen, with a few lively cocktail and gin bars.

Eating out

Wengen's a relatively small village, but it has a decent offering of restaurants serving traditional Swiss, Italian and French cuisines. Most are based within the hotels, but you'll find some great restaurants and cafés on Dorfstrasse or Im Gruebi too. And of course there's no shortage of fondue.

Authentic Italian pizza at Da Sina

On Im Gruebi is Da Sina, an Italian restaurant with an authentic atmosphere – from the decor to the service. The pizza here is renowned, and it's home to a range of good local beers. There's also a lovely view of the Jungfrau from the outdoor patio.

Buses

There aren't any public buses in Wengen.

Ferries

If you make your way down to Interlaken, you can jump on ferries on both Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Services depart once an hour in high season and stop at various towns and villages around the lakes. Ferries on Lake Thun don't start operating until 11am.

Summer lifts

From Wengen, you can catch the Männlichen cable car and Jungfrau railway up the mountains for breathtaking views and fresh air. For other routes, take the Wengernalp railway down to Lauterbrunnen, where you can catch other trains and cable cars.

Trains

Hop on the Wengernalpbahn down to Lauterbrunnen. From here you can catch rail connections to Interlaken in 20 minutes as well as various other places in the Jungfrau region. And take advantage of your Swiss Half Fare Card that you get as part of your holiday for up to 50% off Swiss train journeys during your stay.

On foot

The village of Wengen is pretty small, so it won’t take long to walk from one end to the other, but, as it’s up on the mountain, you’ll have fantastic views wherever you are.

Walking

Over 500km of marked trails await you in the Jungfrau region, a walker’s paradise with Alpine meadows, glacial gorges, crystal-clear lakes and dramatic mountains. The Panorama walk to Kleine Scheidegg is amazing – and the sheer size of the Lauterbrunnen Valley is sure to impress. The summer lifts and trains give you access to more towns and routes, such as the gentle trails from Mürren or the lakeside strolls from bustling Interlaken.

Apple fritter trail

A real treat for your taste buds awaits you at the end of this route. Catch the Männlichen cable car and then take the Männlichen gondola down to the mid-station, and follow the well-used path, keeping an eye out for marmots. You’ll wind through meadows, past chocolate box houses and farms, and through woodland along this trail, which is dotted with information points shaped like apples. At Brandegg station is your reward – a restaurant selling mouthwatering apple fritters.

Mürren promenade

Use the train and cable car to reach the start of this route, in Mürren. From the station, follow the path along the railway track. You’ll pass beautiful waterfalls and the station at Winteregg, plus the farm shop and dairy where you can sometimes watch cheese being made. Arriving at Grutschalp, you can catch the cable car back to Lauterbrunnen.
