Holidays to Punta Prima offer up a pretty beach, waterfront restaurants and leisurely walks along the coastline. And the capital, Mahon, is just a bus ride away.
Punta Prima, on the south-east coast of Menorca, is one of the oldest holiday towns on the island. You’d think it would’ve got too big for its boots by now, but instead the place has kept its traditional charm and laidback attitude. And it’s still as popular as ever, thanks to the white-sand beach – not to mention its easy access to capital, Mahon.
Punta Prima’s calling card has always been the beach. The clean sweep of white sand shows that its Blue Flag status is well-deserved. And the locals don’t go anywhere else, which is a pretty good recommendation in itself. Warm, shallow water makes it a hit with children, and a flag system keeps you posted on how the current is doing.
You’re on the right track for walks at Punta Prima. The town's on the Cami de Cavalls, or Path of Horses – a world-renowned circular trail in the Balearic Islands – taking in 185 kilometres of mostly flat terrain. The route splits into 20 sections, each one clearly signposted and with helpful information on what to expect. There are lots of little beaches for swimming stop-offs en route.
Mahon has been Menorca’s capital ever since the British moved the title from Ciutadella in 1721. The Union Jack influence can still be seen in the Georgian houses near the harbour. Speaking of which, the waterfront's a lively hub of cafés, bars and restaurants. For culture and sights, Santa Maria church holds regular organ recitals and there’s a 19th-century fort opposite the port. It’s all just 20 minutes away by bus.
The bay-shaped beach is of white sand gently shelving into the sea - perfect for families and couples, and although it tends to be rocky at the eastern end, the remainder is pure, soft sand. It is a popular spot at weekends for the local Menorcans so it cannot come more highly recommended than that! There are plenty of beach bars available, serving all types of refreshments, and, together with easy parking right on the beach, it makes for a hassle-free holiday. Try the pedalos for a fun ride on the crystal clear water, or go sailing for the day and explore the pretty coastline. The beach can get windy at times, so watch out for the flag system for safe swimming, or, if you fancy a change of scenery, try the neighbouring cliff-lined bay at Cala Alcaufor.
