Holidays to Tazacorte slow things down to a snail's pace, with a sprinkling of traditional cafés and bars. Plus, there are paths leading down to a marina and beach.
Set on La Palma’s western coast, Tazacorte has some big selling points for such a pint-sized town. First off, it boasts of being the sunniest spot on the whole island. Plus, it’s got old-school appeal, with a cute main plaza surrounded by brightly-painted houses. Then, at the bottom of the hill, there’s Puerto de Tazacorte, where you’ll find a promenade-backed beach.
Peace and quiet take top billing in this neck of the woods. The town’s focal point is a square with no more than a handful of cafés and bars. Outside of this, walkers and hikers are treated to scenic routes through banana plantations and out onto cliff-side paths. A trip up to Mirador El Time is the most popular – about 20 minutes’ drive away. From the café’s balcony, you get a bird’s-eye view over Tazacorte and the coast.
It’s a five minutes’ drive from the beach resort on Tazacorte’s doorstep. In Puerto de Tazacorte, the boulevard is stocked with street cafés and fish restaurants – all of which look out over the black sands. There’s a harbour where you can watch dinky boats unloading their catch. From here, you can also head out on a boat trip, with the chance of spotting dolphins and whales.
