Holidays to Vinuela divert you away from Andalucia's big, beach resorts and up into the mountains, where tradition and alpine panoramas reign supreme.
Traditional charms
Vinuela is Andalusian all over. Here, whitewashed houses cluster along tree-lined avenues, with the odd shop or bar thrown in for good measure. Plus, the Sierra de Tejeda mountain range makes for a peaceful and pretty neighbour.
Manmade marvel
There are reservoirs and then there’s Lake Vinuela. This picturesque body of water is hemmed in by mountains, and a few sand banks have popped up along its edge. There are designated picnic areas for barbecuing, as well as a watersports centre offering sailing lessons. It’s a great spot to hire out kayaks, too, thanks to the mill pond-like water.
Trips to the coast
You’ll find a couple of restaurants and shops in Vineula, but they’re mainly geared up for villagers. The Costa del Sol's seaside resorts are within easy reach, though. Torre del Mar is just 20 minutes’ drive away. It’s got a big, gold-sand beach, which is dotted with bars and thatched umbrellas. Head further along the coast, meanwhile, for Malaga – the region’s capital.
