Torrox holidays deliver the best of below-the-radar Spain. Think whitewashed houses, fine wines and a chilled beach scene.
Torrox is arranged in a long wisp-like shape, with dove-white Andalusian houses dotted along its narrow streets. Join the locals on the main square – Plaza de la Constitucion – for a spot of people-watching, or head to the edge of town for views across the sloping countryside. Its hilly setting does wonders for the weather, too, with a micro-climate that keeps the mercury at the ideal level of warm.
This place has a sibling which prides itself on its sunbathing credentials. Torrox Costa’s less than 10 minutes’ drive from its peaceful namesake, but pays all its attention to tanning. The sandy seafront’s one of the lesser-trodden stretches in the Costa del Sol, but delivers the same sun-drenched set-up. Alternatively, head inland, and you can sample one of the legs of The Route of Sun and Wine – a 55-kilometre circuit that takes in the region’s best grape-based tipples. Torrox is on the list, so you can expect top quality tasting notes.
The neighbours in these parts have plenty going for them, from Blue Flag beaches to lively bar scenes. Nerja’s one of the standout characters on this stretch of coastline, just like its nickname suggests. It’s known as the Jewel of the Costa del Sol, thanks to its blend of postcard-worthy beaches and after-dark party action.
