Holidays to Mijas take you to a traditional Spanish village with authentic restaurants and relaxed nightlife. They also put you within easy reach of some of the Costa del Sol's best beaches.
Authentically Spanish
The Costa del Sol may be one of Spain’s most popular tourist destinations, but you can still get a taste of traditional Andalusian life in Mijas – a mountainside village which is 25 minutes’ drive northeast of Malaga. Laidback holidaymakers head here for the whitewashed villas, cobbled streets and open-air terraces – not to mention the sweeping Mediterranean views.
A nearby beach
Mountain-bound Mijas doesn’t have a beach of its own, but a sweeping stretch of golden sand is 15 minutes’ drive away in the seaside town of Fuengirola. The strip is dotted with rustic eating places called chiringuitos, and you’ll also find a super-long promenade with an extra portion of bars and restaurants.
A village with character
Brightly dressed donkeys – or burro-taxis – are a familiar sight on Mijas’ cobbled streets. They’ll take you up the steep, winding lanes to an 18th-century church – the Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepcion – where you can snap pictures of its pretty gardens and panoramic views. It’s said that from here you can see across the Mediterranean Sea to the Rif Mountains in Morocco.
Daytrips from Mijas
Just south of the village centre you’ll find the Hermitage of the Virgin of the Rock – a tucked-away cave which is a shrine to the Virgin Mary. Pilgrims come in their droves to leave flowers and pictures here. Further afield is Fuengirola, where you’ll see the renovated Castle of Sohail – once an Arabic fortress. Or, you could make the two-hour trip to Granada for the famous Alhambra Palace.
