Holidays to Torrevieja serve up classic holiday staples, like beside-the-beach restaurants and a lively shopping scene.
Torrevieja’s relatively new to the Spanish holiday scene. It’s got everything you’d want in a sun-kissed getaway, like sandy beaches and a lively city centre, but there’s still a place for tradition. Historically, it’s been known for its fishing trade – and you’ll see boats heading out from the harbour even now. Salt is its other forte, and there are chalky-white pans and vast, colourful lakes on the edge of town.
You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to sunbathing here, as Torrevieja’s coastline is peppered with postcard-worthy beaches. Playa La Cura’s the most central of the lot, with a ribbon of parasols that’s backed by bars, cafés and restaurants. Head south past the bustling marina, and you’ll reach peaceful Cala Ferris, where palm trees and grassy dunes border a U-shaped cove.
It’s hard to put your finger on the city’s history. The whole place was levelled by an earthquake in 1829, so it’s had influences from all around Europe during the gradual rebuilding process. These days, along with Valencia, Torrevieja's considered one of the Costa Blanca’s most cosmopolitan cities, with residents from South America, North Africa and Scandinavia. You can even visit an international park dedicated to Torrevieja’s mix-and-match identity.
