Holidays to Santa Cruz de La Palma take you to a Canarian capital where a buzzy port meets over 500 years of history.
With more than five centuries of colonial history under its belt, La Palma’s capital’s as much about sightseeing as it is beach lounging and bar hopping. If your priority is filling up your camera roll, kick things off at Avenida Marítima – a seafront street famous for its brightly painted buildings with flower-draped wooden balconies. Then, rack up your step count along Calle Real. It’s the city’s main street, where a stroll along the cobbles will take you past shops, restaurants, and Plaza de España – home to a church that’s stood since the early 1500s. More historic sights come in the form of 16th-century city walls and the Shrine of Virgen de las Nieves – the oldest religious sculpture in the Canaries. But not all of the city’s calling cards are cultural. Take the beach, for example. It’s a super-sized sweep of soft, black sand with a palm-studded prom to retreat to when it’s time for a sangria. Cheers!
