Holidays to Canyamel are your ticket to lazy beach days, riverside strolls and hilltop hikes.
Relaxed getaways
Canyamel’s tucked away on Majorca’s northeast coast, halfway between the bigger towns of Cala Millor and Cala Ratjada. It gets its name from the Spanish words for honey and sugar, thanks to the bee yards and sugarcane plantations that used to blanket the area. These days, the region’s better known for its beaches, golf courses and natural sights, so you can expect a whole lot of relaxation when you come on holiday here.
Coves and caves
Everything in Canyamel centres around the beach. It’s a shortbread-tinted sandy cove flanked on both sides by tree-carpeted hills. If you want to escape the sun, you’ve got the Caves of Arta within walking distance. This underground network of stalagmite-and-stalactite-packed caverns is home to a chamber as big as the nave of Palma Cathedral. Otherwise, sunbathing and beach volleyball are on the cards.
Walks in nature
The north end of the town’s bordered by a small wetland nature reserve. Go for a walk along the path that runs parallel to the river estuary, and you’ll feel miles away from the hustle and bustle of the seafront. If mountains are more your thing, you can follow a hiking trail to the peak of nearby Puig de Son Jordi for first-rate views of the bay and surrounding countryside.
Town-hopping
Canyamel’s within daytripping distance of a crop of Majorca’s coastal gems. In fact, you could tick off a whole list of towns in a single day. Cala Millor’s the biggest of the bunch – it’s only 15 minutes away, and shows off a huge beach backed by restaurants and shops. A little further south you’ll find Sa Coma, where the calm, clear water could give Caribbean islands a run for their money. From here, it’s a 10-minute drive to Porto Cristo, which is home to the famous Drach Caves and a yacht-packed marina.
