Brilliant beach

Monte Gordo is one of the closest coastal towns to the Spanish border, and it shows off a huge sweep of sand to its international neighbour. This one-time fishing village has gradually turned its attention to holidaymakers, and the mile-long beachfront has everything from tufty dunes to bars and restaurants behind it. It’s pretty chilled apart from that. For a change of scenery, there’s a nature reserve that’s home to chameleons and white storks 10 minutes’ drive away. A stop en route, in the quaint town of Vila Real de Santo António, will show you architecture that mimics Lisbon’s downtown Baixa district.
