Introducing Alte

Alte is a village that lays low in the foothills of the mountains bordering the Algarve. Villas with bougainvillea-draped gardens are the lodging of choice, shops are of the butcher, baker, candlestick maker variety, and the only bars in town belong to the hotels. But that’s the way travellers like it — the Algarve doesn’t get much more peaceful than Alte.

Blue Flag beaches and Gothic cathedrals

Alte is a real hideaway — but that doesn’t mean you’ll be in the middle of nowhere. With wheels, the Blue Flag Fisherman’s Beach is only a half-hour drive away. An escalator climbs up the cliffs to a viewpoint that takes in a sweep of the wave-cut Algarve coast. For something in the way of city life, head for Silves. As well as a castle and Gothic cathedral, it dishes up Portuguese tapas bars tucked away on narrow cobbled streets.
