Madonna di Campiglio, Italy

Known as ‘the Pearl of the Brenta Dolomites’, holidays to Madonna di Campiglio are all about top-notch food, culture and knockout natural beauty.

The high life

Once a popular pick for nobles because of its fresh mountain air and thermal springs, the town still has a high-end feel today. It’s got a reputation for being a good place to people-watch while you sip on a spritz, browse in designer boutiques and tuck into a big plate of fresh pasta, polenta or dumplings.

A natural beauty

If you have a love for all things nature, there are stacks of walking trails up in the Adamello Brenta Natural Park – a UNESCO-protected area with rugged Dolomite peaks and lots of lakes to visit. Breathe in the fresh mountain air here, or wander through the fir-tree forest to a waterfall. And make sure stop off at Malghette lake to look out over the glassy water before heading back down to the town.

Famous frescoes

To check out some local culture, catch a bus a few towns over to Pinzolo and stop at the medieval Church of San Vigilio, known for its ‘dance of death’ fresco. Or for a good look into Trentino’s alpine roots, take a day trip to Caderzone Terme, a rural mountain village with heaps of character – stroll down the winding streets to find out all about life in one of Val Rendena’s oldest settlements. There's a few museums plus a spa here, so brush up on your history before ending the visit with a soak in the bubbling thermal baths.

Top things to see and do in Madonna di Campiglio

Shopping

Bargain buys

Madonna’s known for more high-end spends than bagging a bargain, although savvy shoppers will still be able to find a good deal here. Head to the weekly market in Pinzolo for some local steals.

Mid-range buys

If you’re after a souvenir to squeeze into your suitcase, there are plenty of gift shops where you can pick up a mountain momento. There’re also a few wineries and chocolate shops if you’d like to bring a taste of Madonna home with you.

Designer buys

Jewellers and boutiques selling the best Italian brands line the streets, so it's just the place if you’re looking to splash the cash in style with a shiny new watch or pair of designer sunnies.

Nightlife

Laid-back evenings

There are lots of bars in Madonna where you can sit outside with an aperitivo, in true Italian style. And in August, the Sounds of the Dolomites comes to town – an unmissable mini festival where musicians play classical music outside, near mountain huts and forts, so make sure to catch it if you get the chance.

Lively evenings

For a bit more of a buzz, there’s a great evening scene here. Head to the sophisticated Bar Suisse or Café d’Or for your favourite cocktail and tap your toes to the music.

Food & drink

Eating out

You'll see more than pizza and pasta on the menus in Madonna, and you’ll find lots of traditional Tyrolean specialities – think simple and comforting alpine fare. And with a range of restaurants from mountain huts to Michelin-starred spots, there’s something here for everyone’s budget.

Star-studded sea urchin at Il Gallo Cedrone

Head over to Hotel Bertelli, home to the Michelin-starred Il Gallo Cedrone. It’s got a proper mountain feel with a quirky menu – we’re talking sea urchin, eel broth and octopus cooked using local flavours like dandelion honey, alpine butter and conifer oil. And with a huge cellar that holds around 20,000 wines, you’re sure to find the right tipple to sip alongside your meal.

Tiramisu that takes the cake at Ristorante Le Roi

In Madonna’s centre, Le Roi is a hit with the locals. This traditional trattoria’s got a laidback and authentic feel – share some antipasti, sample some schnitzel or go for a classic pizza. Make sure to book ahead as it can get pretty busy here, although apparently they've got the best tiramisu in town, so it’s easy to see why.

Deer burgers and craft brews at the Home Stube

It doesn’t get much more rustic than this family-run restaurant in the middle of town, with gingham tablecloths, pinecones dotted about the tables and cowhide upholstery. You can dig into all sorts of local favourites here, like homemade dumplings, bratwurst and deer burgers with blueberries and mushrooms foraged nearby. And they even have a microbrewery, so choose a craft beer to savour while you eat.

Getting about

And here’s the great part – with the Trentino Guest Card, you can ride the trains for free, as long as your trip starts and ends in Trentino.

On foot

Madonna’s centre is pedestrianised, so you can meander down the charming streets and cobbled alleys packed with bars, shops and restaurants. Stroll down Via Monte Spinale to get to Piazza Righi, a square filled with flower boxes where you can hop between pavement cafés.

Walking

Walking

The Adamello Brenta Natural Park’s got almost 1,000km of trails waiting for you to explore, from gentle paths to more challenging hikes. Scenic strolls take you along valleys, rivers and alpine meadows – and you might even be able to spot ibex, bears, deer and steinbock on the way. Try the Dolomiti di Brenta trek for some unbeatable photo opps, or give the Five Lakes walk a go for a tour of the park’s wow-worthy lakes. And if you want to see the sights without stretching your legs, you can jump on a gondola for a mountain shortcut.
