Lake Levico holidays

Lake Levico, Italy

Holidays to Lake Levico are all about laid-back beach days, knockout mountain views and exploring Levico Terme's centuries-old sites.

Royal roots

Right on the lakeshore, Levico Terme’s a charming spa town with a piece of the past around every corner. Mineral-rich water running down from the mountain is still used to treat all sorts of medical conditions today, which turned this rustic alpine village into a holiday hot spot during the 1800s – the Austrian royal family even had a palace here. The opulent yellow building’s now the Grand Hotel Imperial, and you can step back in time with a stroll through its gardens full of sweet-smelling flowers. Look out for other nods to the town’s Austro-Hungarian influences, like the onion-domed towers of the pink Holy Redeemer parish church in the centre.

A good spot for a dip

The lake itself is on the smaller side and it’s one of the warmest and clearest in Italy, making it a popular pick for a paddle. If you want to skip the swim, hire a stand-up paddleboard or a pedalo to explore beyond the beach, or go for a wander along the water’s edge. There’s plenty of wildlife around here, so keep your eyes peeled to see how many kinds of bird you can spot. To take the pace up a notch, catch the bus over to the larger Lake Caldonazzo, a firm favourite for windsurfing, sailing and water-skiing.

Hello history

Sat in the Valsugana valley, Levico’s perfectly placed at the foot of the Lagorai mountains, so lots of forts and castles were built higher up the hillside to keep an eye out for any trouble. Starting in the town centre, set off on a stroll to the 19th-century Benne Fortress, a reminder of when this part of Italy was in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Turn back the clock even further and walk to the ruins of Selva Castle or the Church of San Biagio, and don’t forget your camera – there are some cracking panoramic views up here to snap pics of.
