Holidays to Lecco serve up picture-perfect architecture and mountain views – along with a side of historic charm.
Piazzas and postcard views
On the southeastern shore of Lake Como, this charming town’s your launchpad for exploring the lake and mountains. Wander down narrow cobblestone streets with a gelato in hand, or people-watch in a piazza over an espresso and pastry, all surrounded by pastel Renaissance buildings and elegant churches. The vibe’s neo-classical meets medieval, so expect sleek columns and arches alongside rugged castle remains. Fancy exploring further? Hop on a ferry to other chocolate-box lakeside towns like Bellagio (the pearl of Como) or catch a train to Milan for a big city day — you can be there in just 40 minutes.
Sky-high scenery
You’ve got views for days here. Stroll or cycle for a scenic lakeside spin along the tree-lined prom. Up for a climb? Join a tour to the top of the neo-Gothic San Nicolò bell tower – nicknamed the ‘big pencil’ by locals – for stunning views across the town, lake and mountains. At 96m, it’s one of Europe’s tallest towers (the same height as Big Ben). And for even higher views, head to the Piani Resinelli iron walkway, suspended mid-air over the mountains. On a clear day, you’ll spot the town and lake way below – the ultimate backdrop for a next-level selfie.
That branch of Lake Como
Fancy a side of history with your hols? Lecco’s got roots in the Middle Ages. Spot the remains of stone castles like Torre Viscontea, now hosting free exhibitions on local culture. Then there’s Palazzo delle Paure if contemporary art’s your thing. And its literary claim to fame’s that Alessandro Manzoni put it on the map as “that branch of Lake Como” in The Betrothed – dubbed Italy’s most famous novel. Visit his home, then head to Pescarenico – an old fishing village named in the book – for colourful building photo opps and top-notch fish dishes (raw fish platters and grilled octopus, anyone?).
