With a pretty beach and traditional cooking, holidays to Aghios Sostis offer up a taste of the real Greece. Plus there's lively nightlife within walking distance – and the capital Zante Town just down the road.
Eleven kilometres southwest of Zante’s capital is one of the island’s most beautiful villages. Aghios Sostis has kept a grip on its traditional charm so you’ll find chapels and old-style Greek tavernas. Its most handsome feature, though, is the quiet coastline, dotted with little coves and pine trees. And when you fancy a change of pace, party town Laganas is just a kilometre’s walk away.
The golden-sand beach at Aghios Sostis might be rather on the small side, but it’s a real looker. Rocky, pine-clad cliffs surround the sands, giving it a cosy, secluded feel, and the shallow waters are incredibly clear. There’s a full complement of sunloungers and umbrellas along with beachside tavernas and cafés – yet despite all this, the place never gets too crowded.
You can be at the island capital, Zante Town, in 20 minutes. The place was rebuilt after an earthquake in 1953, but it’s kept its old-fashioned Venetian style – and thanks to a New York-style grid system, it’s very easy to find your way around. Highlights include the busy marina and the Venetian fortress on the hill. You’ve also got a clutch of decent museums, including the Museum of Byzantine Art.
