Greek charm

A boat or hydrofoil takes you across to Limenaria on the southwest coast of Thassos. Here, traditional Greek charm spreads from the harbourside restaurants all the way through to the town’s shops and bars. All this, plus wide, sandy beaches and Mount Athos shimmering on the horizon.

Sandy beaches

The long Limenaria Beach is just 500 metres from the town centre. The sea here is calm, but with enough breeze to zip windsurfers and water-skiers through the breakers. The same distance east is Metalleia Beach, with its snorkel-friendly water. And at Tripiti Beach, 5 minutes’ drive away, confident swimmers can explore the caves at the edge of the bay.

Limenaria’s past

Limenaria’s much more than your typical ex-fishing village. High up on a craggy hilltop overlooking the main beach, the turreted Palataki building is a souvenir of the town’s mining history. Underneath are the tunnels and shafts of the old mines, which you can see on an underground tour. For a more colourful take on Limenaria’s history, the town’s Folklore Museum has traditional dresses and embroidery.

Daytrips to Thassos Town

The ancient capital of the island, Thassos Town, is just half-an-hour’s drive away – or an hour if you’re taking the bus. Known to locals as Limenas, the place is a bit like a giant outdoor museum, with ancient relics, temples and defensive walls to explore. Look out for the Sanctuary of Pan, an artificial cave carved out of a hill.
