Holidays to Kalafatis show you Mykonos’ quieter side, where a crowd-free beach takes the limelight.
Mykonos might have a reputation for being a glamourous party animal, but there’s more than one side to this Greek Island’s personality. In Kalafatis, on the south-east coast, it’s pin-drop peaceful. Lazy beach days and relaxed meals in sea-view tavernas are what this spot’s all about. And if you fancy a change of pace, you’re only a 20-minute taxi ride away from Mykonos Town, where a mishmash of whitewashed alleys hide bars, museums and shops.
If there’s one thing Kalafatis scores highly on, it’s the beach. The long, sandy sweep has been dubbed one of the island’s best, and its size and relatively out-of-the-way spot means it never feels too crowded. Adrenaline-pumping watersports are big business here, too – jet-skiing and windsurfing are two of the most popular picks. Elsewhere, the resort’s home to little more than a couple of restaurants and a sprinkling of small hotels and villas, so your peace-and-quiet fix comes easy (no noise-cancelling headphones needed).
Daytrips from Kalafatis are as varied as they come. If you want more beach time and al fresco meals, you can taxi between the little towns along the island’s south coast – they each come with their own scenic stretches of sand and pebbles. Catamaran cruises are popular around here, too. Or, head to Mykonos Town to get lost in its maze-like, bougainvillea-draped streets and eat seafood in a restaurant overlooking the harbour.
