Superb sunsets
Santorini might be one of a whole host of Greek islands on offer, but it’s made a name for itself thanks to its seen-to-be-believed sunsets. The town of Oia is one of the most popular spots to catch the colour-changing skies, as the best viewpoints are surrounded by Santorini’s signature blue-domed buildings. And if you want to soak up the scenery with slightly thinner crowds, the likes of Imerovigli and Firostefani are good places to start.
Capital with character
The capital of Santorini – Thira – has shades of the island’s authentic Greek charm, but also showcases a stylish side. Museums, boutique shopping lanes and galleries are commonplace, so it’s a magnet for cultural types. The town’s parked on the precipice of the island’s iconic volcanic crater, too, so the views you can take in when you’re not indulging in a shopping spree are first-rate.
Volcanic sands
The beaches in Santorini look a little different to the sort of biscuit-coloured sands you might see in Spain or Portugal – seafront stretches here come in a much darker shade of volcanic black. For a taste of some of the best sunbathing spots, make tracks for Perissa, Kamari or Perivolos.
