Skiathos, Greece

Aselinos holidays plant you on the quiet side of Skiathos, with unspoilt beaches and pine tree-smothered mountains.

Sleepy side of Skiathos

Aselinos is on the northern side of Skiathos, away from all the tourist hotspots, so you can expect unspoilt beaches and sleepy towns nearby. Pangia Eikonistria Monastery’s just down the road, too – it’s got a stone exterior with frescoes and art dating back to the 18th and 19th century, with a surrounding of pine trees. If you’re more about the shops and nightlife, bubbly Skiathos Town’s only a 25-minute drive away.

Unspoilt shores

This place is the ideal beach base if you’re after a quieter portion of coastline. The main beach is called Megalos Aselinos – it’s a syrup-hued bay covered in thick sand and small pebbles, which curves around the Aegean Sea with mountains in the background. It’s usually pretty quiet, and you can bag a space under the thatched parasols, or grab a table at the shack-like taverna that dishes up authentic Greek food, like feta cheese topped salads and bowls of tzatziki. Because of its natural rugged backdrop, boat trips often call in here in the afternoon, so it can get a little busier then.

Trips to Skiathos town

The island’s capital, Skiathos Town, is worth the drive if you want to experience something a little livelier. The centre of the town’s a maze of narrow cobbled streets which are lined with terraced houses and shops. It has a big port in the middle which is home to the ruins of an old Venetian fortress, which Mamma Mia! fans may recognise from the big screen. Papadiamanti Street is the beating heart of this place, it’s full of shops, restaurants, bars and clubs, so if you want a taste of the island’s nightlife, that’s the place to be.
