Moscenicka Draga holidays

Holidays to Moscenicka Draga mix pebble beaches, a pretty harbour and a medieval old town just steps above.

A harbour village on the Opatija Riviera

Small but seriously scenic, Moscenicka Draga sits on Croatia’s Opatija Riviera, where the Adriatic meets the forested slopes of Ucka Nature Park. With a sea-meets-mountain backdrop, this former fishing village is all charm with pastel houses, a tiny harbour with boats bobbing in the water, and a waterfront lined with cafés, gelaterias and little restaurants. And, perched above it all is Moscenice – the medieval hilltop town the village takes its name from – watching over the bay below.

Beach days the Croatian way

This coastline is famous for pebbles so smooth they almost sparkle. The star is Sipar Beach, one of the Opatija Riviera’s must‑visit stretches – a long, pebbly pearl with crystal‑clear, shallow Adriatic waters and a backdrop of lush green forest. It’s ideal for swimming, snorkelling and easy, lazy dips, with cafés and bars close by for breaks between swims. Smaller coves dot the shoreline too, including Sv. Ivan Beach, a quieter spot along the coastal path. And if you’re up for exploring a little further afield, the neighbouring beaches of Medveja and Brsec offer even more turquoise coves tucked between the cliffs.

Hilltop history

Just above the bay sits Moscenice, a medieval stone village perched 173 metres above the sea. It’s linked to the coast by a staircase of 753 steps – climb it and you’ll be met with cobbled alleys, terracotta rooftops and all the sea views you could wish for. There’s also a tiny ethnographic museum filled with traditional tools and costumes that give you a glimpse into local life through the centuries. Pair the visit with a coffee on the village terrace – the panoramas alone are worth it, trust us.

A great base for exploring

Moscenicka Draga may feel peaceful, but it’s perfectly placed for exploring the wider coast. Elegant Opatija is about 25 minutes away by car, famous for its grand seaside promenade and pastel Austro‑Hungarian villas – the kind of place that once drew Europe’s aristocrats for some winter sun and sea air. And for nature lovers, Ucka Nature Park sits just a few minutes inland. Here, forest trails, sweeping viewpoints and winding mountain roads open up panoramas over the Adriatic and the islands of Kvarner Bay.
