Soll, Austria

Holidays to Söll take you to a charming village in a sunny valley of hills and pastures, against the dramatic backdrop of the Hohe Salve and Wilder Kaiser mountains.

Sightsee from Söll

Söll is a fantastic base for sightseeing and sampling the ancient Austrian cultures of the Wilder Kaiser mountains. And with over 700km of signposted trails across the region, you really can’t run out of walks, from gentle strolls to trickier hill paths. What's more, the lifts are open through the summer, so you don’t have to be a big walker to reach those views. Top tip – use your Wilder Kaiser guest card for discounts on the summer cable cars up to the mountains (you'll get it for free with your stay).

Traditionally Tyrolean

The frescoed houses and domed church of Söll are typically Tyrolean, as are the welcoming bars and cafés. Local traditions are still very much alive in the village, with festivals and parades an enchanting part of everyday summer life. And there’s plenty of evening atmosphere to soak up as the village begins to bustle with Tyrolean folklore, from local festivities to open-air brass band concerts.

Beaches

Ahornsee in Söll

In the centre of the village you'll find the Ahornsee bathing lake. It's smaller than many lakes in the area, and is a pretty spot to cool off in the summer sun. There's a diving board, shower areas, a children's play area and deckchairs with parasols.

Shopping

Bargain buys

For some local bargains, don't miss the Z'sammkemma, the village's weekly market and entertainments rolled into one. There's music, food and drink and craft stalls too.

Mid-range buys

Söll has a smattering of sports shops where you can find a mix of activewear and casual gear.

Nightlife

Laid-back evenings

As Söll is pedestrianised, pottering around on foot is a wonderful way to spend a quiet evening - window-shop, people-watch and snap some evening holiday photos.

Lively evenings

Immerse yourself in traditional Austrian culture at the village's weekly Tyrolean evening. You're in for a fun night of yodelling, Tyrolean music and folk dancing.

Food & drink

Local ingredients

Söll is proud of its local ingredients, like honey, cheese, milk and even schnapps. You'll find lots of local food that incorporates some or all of this regional fare. When it comes to eating out, you'll find everything from small, casual eateries to fine-dining restaurants dotted around the resort.

Eat in the mountains

If you'd like to venture a little further afield to eat out, you'll find a couple of huts in the mountains, with incredible views. On the menu are local favourites and homely classics.

Getting about

Buses

Your Wilder Kaiser guest card will give you free use of the KaiserJet bus service, which connects Söll to the nearby villages of Scheffau, Going and Ellmau - this card's included with your stay, so pick it up when you check in at your accommodation. There's also a local bus service to Kuftstein (25 minutes), St Johann in Tyrol (35 minutes) and Wörgl (25 minutes), and you can hop on the hikers' buses for free too.

Summer lifts

Use your Wilder Kaiser guest card to get discounts on summer cable cars in the area, so you can access mountain walking trails and see some incredible views. The Bergbahn Erlebnis Card covers 14 lifts and cable cars, and you can buy this through our rep team on the ground. Just be aware that some lifts don't open until mid-June.

Trains

The nearest train station is a 25-minute bus journey away in the town of Wörgl.

On foot

Söll is easy to traverse on foot, as it's a relatively flat village surrounded by rolling hills and pastures. It's usually quiet too, unless there's a parade or a festival.

Walking

Green pastures

The area around Söll is all rolling hills and wide green pastures, where you can spend days strolling and enjoying the scenery without breaking a sweat.

Hintersteinersee Lake

From town, head towards Lake Moorsee and follow the road around the shore. After the underpass, you'll reach a river and, once across, see signposts for the Hintersteinersee. The route is uphill but not too demanding. You can spend the day on the shores of the largest lake in the Wilder Kaiser Valley.

Scheffau to Ellmau

Catch the bus to nearby Scheffau and then take the cable car up the mountain. Find the signs for route 6 and follow it to join route 11, past the Hartkaisersee lake and through beautiful woodland. Route 4 will take you down into Ellmau. You can hop on the bus from Ellmau to get back home.
