Oistins holidays
Jump to sections
Oistins holidays dish up the best fresh fish in Barbados, as well as china-white beaches and friendly locals.
Quiet Caribbean vibes
The fishing village of Oistins shows off a quieter side of Barbados. You’ll find it right at the southernmost point of the island, a 20-minute drive from the capital, Bridgetown. Oistins is famous for its fish – hit the talc-white beach and you’ll see a steady stream of fishermen sailing in and out of the harbour. They’re super friendly – if you head to the seafront at sundown, you might be invited to join them for fresh fish grilled over a beach bonfire.
Fish Fridays
Fish is such a big deal here that Friday nights are dedicated to celebrating it. Skip dinner and make a beeline for what’s known as the Fish Fry at Oistins Bay Gardens. Vendors in island-style cabins serve up all sorts of sea fare to the sound of calypso and reggae music. You can sample everything from tuna, swordfish and marlin to mahi-mahi and flying fish – all straight from the day’s catch.
Historic Bridgetown
When you’re not lounging on Oistins’ photogenic beach or sampling locally produced rum punch in one of its bars, take a daytrip over to Bridgetown. Barbados’ capital city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and serves up historical landmarks like the Parliament buildings and a collection of 400-year-old houses. When you’re done sightseeing, stop for coffee on the lively waterfront.
