Doha
Holidays to Qatar sizzle in the summer and stay warm all winter, so they’re a great shout for sunshine whenever you go.
Spin the globe to Western Asia and you’ll spot Qatar sticking out on the northeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Almost every corner of the country is surrounded by the Persian Gulf’s waters – apart from its border with Saudi Arabia in the south – so you’ve got loads of options for beach days. The country’s coastal capital, Doha, tends to be the base of holidays to Qatar – it’s one of the world’s fastest-growing cities, with a skyscraper-lined shoreline that gives Singapore a run for its money.
Until recently, Qatar probably wasn’t on most people’s lips when they were talking holidays. But, after the country was beamed onto the big screen to millions during the FIFA World Cup 2022, it’s quickly becoming a major player on the Middle East’s holiday scene. As well as roads, a metro system and an airport, around a hundred hotels were built in preparation for the event in Doha.
Doha started out life as a small fishing village, which you’ll probably find hard to believe when you’re stood in front of the huge skyscrapers that run along its shoreline. Its modern look might have you thinking it lacks any history, but nose around in the right places and you’ll see it’s held on to some traditional touches, too. The Souq Wakif’s the place to pick up traditional clothing, spices and souvenirs, and the Museum of Islamic Art features work from more than a thousand years ago.
Where can I find the latest travel advice?
All your questions about entry requirements, visas, passports or health information are answered on our Travel Advice page.
What travel adapter do I need for Qatar?
When visiting Qatar, the standard electrical outlets use the British three-pin rectangular blade plug Type G. We recommend bringing a UK-to-Qatar travel adapter for your devices. Many hotels in Qatar also offer universal sockets, but it's best to be prepared with your own adapter.
What are the best beaches in Qatar?
Qatar boasts Katara Beach in Doha for calm waters and facilities, or Fuwairit Beach in the north for a more secluded setting. Many resorts also have private beaches where guests can enjoy water sports and beachfront amenities.
What should I pack for Qatar?
When visiting Qatar, pack lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for hot weather. Bring sun protection essentials including a wide-brimmed hat, high-SPF sunscreen and sunglasses, plus a light jacket or wrap for air-conditioned indoor spaces. Include comfortable walking shoes, a refillable water bottle and a light scarf for women when visiting religious sites.
Where are the best places to shop in Qatar?
Qatar offers diverse shopping experiences. You'll find luxury brands and local goods at Villaggio Mall and Doha Festival City. For a more traditional experience, explore Souq Waqif for spices, textiles, and souvenirs. Many resorts also have boutiques for convenient shopping.
What's the nightlife like in Qatar?
Qatar offers nightlife centred around hotels and upmarket venues in Doha. Head to The Pearl-Qatar for waterfront dining and shisha lounges, or explore West Bay for rooftop bars and live music. Alcohol is mainly served in hotels.
Where can I try local food in Qatar?
To experience traditional Qatari cuisine, we recommend trying local restaurants in Souq Waqif or Al Wakrah Souq. Many upscale hotels and resorts also offer authentic Qatari dishes. Look for specialties like machbous (spiced rice with meat) and luqaimat (sweet dumplings).
Should I tip in Qatar?
Tipping isn't mandatory in Qatar, but it's appreciated for good service. In restaurants, a 10% service charge is often included in the bill. If you're pleased with the service at your resort or in taxis, a small tip is welcome but not expected.
Are there any local customs I should know about in Qatar?
When visiting Qatar, it's important to dress modestly, especially outside hotel areas. During Ramadan, eating and drinking in public during daylight hours is restricted. We recommend being respectful when taking photos of people and asking for permission when appropriate.
