Laidback location

Aside from having a name you just can’t stop saying, Bububu’s proper hideaway holiday territory. Snuggled into the west coast of Zanzibar’s main island, this place tends to fly under the radar compared to other Zanzibar resorts. Just take its main strip of sand, Fuji Beach, for example – to get there, you take a dirt track from the centre of the village. Cute fact: villagers named Bububu after the sound of the railroad that used to trundle through it.

Sightseeing in Stone Town

Zanzibar’s been ruled by loads of nations over the years, and they’ve all left a lasting impression. Step inside Stone Town – a 30-minute drive from Bububu – and you’ll see exactly what we mean. Its architecture’s like a selection box of different styles, from European to Arabian and Indian. A 17th-century fort and an Anglican cathedral get most of the attention – the church was built over an old slave market, and plays host to a museum with stories from the past. If you’re still around later in the day, follow the scent of barbecued meat to the Forodhani Market for a street-food style dinner – it’s 10-out-of-10 tasty.

Beaches beyond Bububu

Zanzibar’s edged by beaches on all corners, so if you fancy a change of scene you’ve got plenty of options to choose from. What’s more, Bububu’s really central, which means every beach is less than an hour’s drive away. Our faves are Nungwi, in the north, which is known for its turtle conservation centre, and Kizimkazi, down south – the jumping off point for dolphin-spotting trips.
