Get a feel for Mauritius from the locals’ point of view on holidays to Quatre Bornes.
Quatre Bornes is a bit different to your typical Mauritian beach resort. It’s a town that’s known for its colourful markets and local culture, and it’s located on the west side of Mauritius. It neighbours some of the island’s best beach resorts, too, like and a 20-minute drive gets you to the capital, Port Louis.
Although Quatre Bornes is pitched slightly inland, you can still take advantage of Mauritius’ west coast. You can get to Flic en Flac in 30 minutes on a direct bus, or even shorter if you have a car. It’s home to one of the longest sandy beaches on the island and the lagoon is surrounded by a coral reef, making it safe to swim and snorkel.
The market in Quatre Bornes isn’t just a tourist attraction – it’s also a firm favourite with the locals. Just like the rest of us, Mauritians love a bargain, so you can join in with the haggling to get yourself a good deal. You’ll find the market sells everything from souvenirs and toys and textiles and fruit and veg. Head here on Thursday or Friday for the best selection of local produce.
Quatre Bornes’ highland location gives way to some impressive hiking trials. Corps de Garde is one worth a mention and is suitable for beginners, too. It takes around four hours to complete. As you trek up the basalt rock track, you’ll see impressive drops and panoramic views of the entire island as far as the eye can see.
