Holidays to Mont Choisy take you to Mauritius’ west coast, where sugar-fine beaches are backed by a blanket of greenery.
Top-tier beaches
Mont Choisy Beach unravels along the shoreline for around two kilometres, making it the longest beach in the northern part of Mauritius. Its crumbly, vanilla-coloured sands are perfect for sunbathing on, and the water’s as clear as glass. Don’t be surprised if you spot a few speedboats out on the waves – this place is a hotspot for watersports. Kayaking, parasailing and water-skiing are the kinds of activities on the cards if you’re craving some adrenaline. If you stick around all day, you’ll get a stellar sunset view from Mont Choisy Beach, too.
Colours of the capital
The island’s capital, Port Louis, is well within reach when you stay in Mont Choisy – you can drive there in less than 30 minutes. It’s famous for its French colonial architecture and 19th-century horse-racing track. Port Louis Central Market’s a must-visit, too – it's lined with colourful stalls flogging everything from spices and vegetables to shoes and jewellery. If you’re into plants, you could take a slight detour to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden on your way to the city. It’s said to be the oldest garden of its kind in the southern hemisphere, and it’s known for its centrepiece pond filled with South American waterlilies.
A sweet day out
One of Mauritius’ biggest exports is raw sugar, and you’ll find a few sugarcane plantations scattered across the island. They’re fascinating to visit if you’re into your history – one comes with a museum attached, and another’s sat next to a grand vintage chateau. The sugarcane stalks can grow up to four metres tall when they’re in season, and quite often the plants will be used to make rum, so if you take a tour around a plantation, you might get a bonus rum-tasting session. Two popular spots to visit – Château de Labourdonnais and L'Aventure du Sucre – are within 15 minutes’ drive of Mont Choisy. And on the topic of sweet stuff, there’s a vanilla plantation about 45 minutes’ drive away, too.
