Settings like Koblenz’s don’t come around often. The city’s a meeting place of mountains and rivers and the Rhine and Moselle rivers come together here, too. The waterfront’s dotted with UNESCO-stamped forts and palaces, while fairy tale castles christen the hilltops on the edge of town. And the surrounding valleys are teeming with terraced vines and world-class wineries. You can take a cable car up to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress for spectacular views over the city and its two rivers. When you arrive at the fort, you can explore its many museums, as well. Alternatively, catch a bus to Schloss Stolzenfels. This hilltop-castle-turned-palace is super-grand, which is fitting considering it’s played host to guests like Queen Victoria.
Historic sights are the order of the day on this excursion. An expert guide will get things started in Koblenz’s Altstadt – or old town. You’ll roam around the narrow lanes on a walking tour, ticking off statue-lined squares, iconic fountains and the Romanesque towers of the Church of our Lady. After you’ve seen the major players, you’ll catch a bus transfer across the Rhine to a hilltop that overlooks Koblenz. This spot’s dominated by the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, and you’ll follow a path around the outside to a panoramic viewpoint. From here, you’ll have vistas of the German Corner – the point of the city where the Moselle and Rhine rivers meet. Your guide will fill you in on the fortress’ history, before you board a bus back to the ship.
