Cologne’s an iconic German city for so many reasons – like its beer halls, Christmas markets and a cathedral that’s graced many a holiday brochure cover. It’s also a city of contrasts where ancient Roman walls and Medieval churches rub shoulders with a postmodern quarter chock-full of chic shops. For drinks, head to Paffgen, a popular beer hall and garden. Or visit the Imhoff-Schokoladenmuseum on the waterfront – a museum dedicated to the history of chocolate. Try to pronounce its name while sampling a tasty chunk or two. And don’t leave Cologne without walking through its cathedral. This World Heritage Site hovers majestically over the roofs of the city, and its interior’s just as impressive as its two spikey spires.
On this two-and-a-half-hour excursion, you’ll get to try some of Cologne’s locally brewed, world-renowned beers, plus see some of city’s most famous landmarks – like the cathedral and the Roman city gates. Cologne's the cultural heart of the riverside region known as the Rhineland, and comes with a buzzing arts scene, more than 30 museums, hundreds of galleries and popular breweries. This excursion takes you straight to the old town, where you’ll visit two German breweries. A guide will give you a tour of each one, and tell you all about how the beers – which are unique to Cologne – are produced. You'll learn all about Kolsch, which originated from Cologne, as you taste a couple of different varieties of the beer. You'll also hear about Cologne's brauhauses – AKA breweries or pubs – and their unique tweaks to the original Kolsch recipe. And they'll share their rules and traditions, like making sure you don't foot the bill for the first round by finishing your beer first.
