This charming town – which is also known as Gorkum – is a big hit with history buffs. Its star-shaped city walls are some of the largest and best preserved in the Netherlands, and they’ve been a fixture around the old town since the 17th century. Nowadays, you can still walk the entire five-kilometre trail around the city on top of the ramparts. If you don’t fancy the scenic stroll, it’s still worth climbing up for the views over the river. Back on the ground, meanwhile, you can also visit the Grote Kerk – a historic church which has been around even longer than the city walls. And, if you fancy sitting back and trying a local treat, keep your eyes peeled for Gorcumsche Zoute Bollen – a salted biscuit, which has been doing the rounds in the town for well over a century.
