Perched on Belgium’s Scheldt River and dating back to the Middle Ages, Antwerp’s a city of contrasts. It’s famous for its flashy diamond district, as well as its Renaissance architecture. It’s popular with fashionistas and art lovers, yet retains its Medieval heart. Be sure to walk the ‘Diamond Square Mile’ – it’s lined with grinding shops, exhibitions and diamond showrooms. Then head to the Grote Market, a central square in the old town. It’s fringed with typical examples of Antwerp’s Flemish Renaissance architecture, and provides a great photo opportunity. And art enthusiasts should carve out some time to visit the house of the Baroque painter, Peter Paul Rubens. This 17th-century building is full of period rooms showing some his finest artworks.
Bruges’ entire historical quarter’s been made a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And you’ll get up close to a bunch of its standout attractions during this guided walking tour. After a 90-minute journey from the port, you’ll start with a couple of photo stops at a 500-year-old brewery and the Church of Our Lady. The latter’s home to a world-famous Madonna and Child sculpture by Michelangelo. Then, you’ll be able to take some pictures of the charcoal-coloured walls of the Basilica of the Holy Blood. It’s believed there’s a piece of cloth here that’s stained with the blood of Jesus. Next, you’ll head to the market square, where you’ll have some free time to wander off on your own. No trip to Bruges is complete without climbing the 366 steps to the top of the Belfry of Bruges. The views of the city from the top of this Medieval bell tower will make a great addition to your holiday album.
