One of the smaller stops along the Douro, this cosy little village is no less attractive than its bigger neighbours. Old stone houses, cobbled streets and rolling hills filled with vineyards are all fixtures here, and the surrounding forests are ideal if you like to hike. If you’d rather take things easy, there’s a handful of restaurants that specialise in Portuguese dishes. Or if you really fancy taking your foot off the gas for a few hours, then head to the thermal baths. They’re just a couple of miles away from the heart of the village, and the natural, sulphur-rich waters have been soothing the locals here for more than a century.
