Despite being just an hour’s drive from Vienna, Krems couldn’t be more different from the capital. It’s a quiet customer that’s content to stay under the radar, and visitors tend to slip into the laidback local style with ease. Cobbled squares and ice-cream-coloured buildings signal the centre of town, and there are plenty of cafés and wine bars serving the local speciality, Riesling. The most historic sights, like the 15th-century city gates and the Piarist Church, have been well looked after. There’s a love affair with the arts, as well, which becomes clear when you start to tally up the number of galleries.
You can look forward to photo-worthy architecture and quaint cobbled streets as you wander around the small town of Krems. A guide will lead the way between the tour’s must-see spots. One of the most impressive sights on the route is the Steiner Tor. This Baroque-inspired gateway looks more like a church at first glance, and signals the entrance to the town’s historic core. Once you pass through, the main shopping parade – Obere Landstrasse – unravels in front of you. Nose around the surrounding streets, and you’ll see museums, art galleries and churches tucked away. Among them is the Parish Church of St Veit, which has been around since the 1600s.
