It might have city in its name, but Haines City gives plenty of nods to small-town America, and is known for its welcoming local community. It’s a great base for visiting Florida’s world-famous theme parks, too, with the main hotspots just a 30-minute drive away. Looks-wise, you can expect groves of citrus trees, clean roads lined with retail stores and family run restaurants, and lots of water. In fact, there are 16 swimming, fishing and boating spots that stud the Haines City area, so watersports are easy to come by.

Meet the neighbours

Walt Disney World Resort's the first port of call for any visitor to Florida. Magic Kingdom Park kicks things off with Mickey and Minnie parades, the Cinderella Castle, and world-famous rides like Space Mountain. You’ve also got EPCOT, Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park and Disney's Hollywood Studios to explore, on top of Universal Orlando Resort, which is closer to central Orlando. Haines City is just a half-hour drive from the lot.

Between chasing the thrills of the theme parks, make a little time for the highlights of Haines City. A word association game would go: Haines City, lakes, fishing, barbecue, ribs, grapefruit pie, citrus groves, freshly squeezed orange juice, downtown shopping. And attractions worth adding to your agenda include Ridge Island Groves – a farm where you can pick peaches, blueberries and blackberries – and Lakeside Eva Community Park. The latter flaunts a grassy lakeside park, complete with a playground and an outdoor swimming pool.
