The Candlewood Suites New York City Times Square

We spent three nights at the Candlewood Suites, Times Square. On the positive side: Rooms were reasonable, just big enough and the location was convenient to both the Javits Center (we walked one day) and to other Times Square attractions (about a 10 minute walk). Rooms were very basic, but clean and the amenities were all functional (A/C was good, water pressure was good, etc.). We found SEVERAL excellent restaurants within a 5 minute walk. I can definitely recommend Aya Sushi on 39th and Buenavista Latin and Nittis Italian restaurants on 9th Ave. There were also kitchenettes, but we did not utilize any of those amenities save for the refrigerator which worked just fine. On the negative side: The location is convenient, but the street it is on is not nearly as "nice" as the hotels just on the other side of the block. There is construction and that may be attracting the element that seemed to enjoy hanging out under the scaffolding and in the secluded, plywood areas that created. In the evenings, we were not always 100% comfortable walking under those areas and chose to cross the street and cross back once past them. I assume that is temporary, but I would be remiss if I did not mention it. Noise levels were typical for a downtown Manhattan hotel with the usual sirens, car horns and expletives (lol) at all hours of the night. For the money, it was an excellent value. But, to be completely honest I would probably spend a few dollars more per night to stay at a hotel just a block away.

The good: price, I think I paid $160 for a Thursday night stay. Location: right on the edge of Times Square. Cleanliness: room seemed fairly clean. Kitchenette: I guess was good to have if you were staying multiple nights. The bad: this is definitely just a middle of the road hotel. It's fairly beat up in terms of the lobby, elevators, and hallways. Not terrible but not great. My room had a faint cigarette smoke smell, but pretty much everywhere had a strong smell of weed. Room was pretty minimal. Flat screen TV from easily 10+ years ago. Maybe I'm used to nicer places but I was glad I was only staying a single night.

Booked this hotel for 1 night pre-cruise. Chose the 1 bed apartment to keep price down, for 3 of us. Room was ok smaller than I was expecting but was fine. Kitchen had appropriate facilities and shower was good, with sufficient towels. However, staff weren't helpful. On checking in asked what time breakfast was served. Was told we don't do breakfast. I had booked bed/breakfast was given a telephone number to ring and order. When it arrived it was cold. Not what I was expecting. Wouldn't have paid extra for this on booking if I'd known it had to be ordered in. When checking out asked if staff could order us a taxi. They informed us that we had to go to the hotel next door and they would order it for us. Also, they were unable to print bill when checking out so they had to email it to me. I knew the hotel was basic but I expected the staff to be more helpful. I'm glad we only stayed 1 night.
