Holidays to Seferihisar are all about taking it easy. Saying that, it's still an up-and-coming spot with a new marina and beach hotels joining the Medieval port and crumbling ruins.
Seferihisar is a peaceful district on the west coast of Turkey. There are two neighbourhoods to watch out for – Sigacik port, with its historical port and supermodern marina, and inland Seferihisar town. The rest of the countryside is a patchwork of tangerine trees, olive groves and vine-stuffed greenhouses. History runs deep here, so you can expect hills and beaches to be spritzed with millennia-old ruins.
The coastal stretch called Sigacik is on its way to becoming a tourist magnet. The Medieval walls and working waterfront of the port area make a pretty picture, while the newly-built Teos Marina reels in jumbo yachts. This luxury mooring was only built in 2010, so it’s got a well-polished line-up that ticks off a restaurant, spa and shops. New hotels are popping up all over, too – they usually tag on to the beaches dashing the coast.
For a shot of history, head to the ruin-smattered countryside. Teos is the biggie. A one-time mammoth Greek city, it’s now an atmospheric jumble of broken temple columns and time-smoothed streets. To get there, follow the signs to Akkum – it’s about a 10-minute drive away.
With wheels, you can get to Izmir in an hour. Jostling with museums, bazaars, and waterfront cafés, this place has all the marks of a cosmopolitan city. The Greek island of Samos is also an hour away – just hop on a ferry at the harbour. Most people head straight for its postcard-perfect countryside, but it’s also got a bunch of port towns and beach resorts.
