A historic alpine village, Pontresina holidays mean beautiful trails and top-tier views of glaciers, pine forests and the Upper Engadine mountains.

Glaciers, forests, rivers and valleys

Surrounded by glaciers and the magnificent 3,000m peaks that shape the Bernina valley, this peaceful retreat keeps people coming back for the fresh mountain air, unbeatable alpine scenery and seemingly endless hiking and biking trails. Accessed via the Bernina Line, Europe’s highest railway route, this is a place to soak up local culture, embrace nature and spot wildlife. Notably, Pontresina is home to one of the biggest ibex colonies in the Alps.

Low profile, rich character

Pontresina is a traditional Engadine town with a relaxed, yet elegant feel to it. Its grand Belle Époque hotels, ornately designed stone houses with flower-filled fronts, and local village atmosphere gives the place a charming feel. A particular highlight and a must-visit when you’re here is the Church of Santa Maria, its 12th-century medieval frescoes making it one of the most valuable buildings in the Canton of Graubünden. While wandering the streets, listen out for the locals speaking in the Puter dialect of Romansch, known to be one of the oldest languages still spoken.

A place for activity

There’s lots to see and do for days out here, like the Bellavita Pool and Spa. It has a 75m-long waterslide, gardens, lounging areas with mountain views and all the wellness bells and whistles you could want – a popular spot for the whole family. The Alpine Museum is the place to learn the history of the valley and the development of local mountaineering, as well as view exhibits from all over the world. And for music lovers, catching an open-air concert by Camerata Pontresina in the larch forest outside the town is a must. They perform at 11am daily throughout summer – so you’ll have lots of chances to catch a show.

Good to know

Don't forget, with your Half-Fare Travelcard, which is included in your holiday to Pontresina, you can explore for less. There is no need to apply before you go and it gives you up to half price on train, bus and boat tickets, as well as some cable car tickets.

Top things to see and do in Pontresina

Beaches

Take a dip in Lake Staz

You’re rewarded with a fantastic scene when you arrive at Lake Staz, which is about an hour’s walk from the centre of Pontresina. Nestled in a wide-open clearing of a forest, it’s the most famous lake in the Engadine. Set yourself up a nice relaxing spot on the beach, or test the waters by hopping off from one of the two jetties. You’ll also find a restaurant and children’s playground close to the lakeshore.

Shopping

Bargain buys

The Laret market, which takes place every other Thursday throughout the height of summer, is a great place to meet the locals and browse various Engadine crafts and food specialities. Dazzling jewellery or hand-painted toys, sweet waffles or raclette-filled bread – discover these and much more as you take a mooch around.

Mid-range buys

The ‘Pontresina shopping mile’ on the Via Maistra is the place for picking up holiday gifts and handy things for your trip. So have your tote bag at the ready as you explore the range of sports shops, chocolatiers, jewellery stores, cheese shops, florists and galleries.

Designer buys

There’s a selection of high-end boutiques in the town, but if you’re wanting to make a day of it, nearby St Moritz should be your main port of call. You’ll find big names in Italian fashion here, and if it’s jewellery or a watch you’re after, you’ll be in the right spot.

Laid-back evenings

As a fairly small place, Pontresina is well suited for those who enjoy chilled-out evenings. Close the day out at the Crast-Ota sun terrace, a ridge above the town with loungers, free blankets and delightful views across to the Roseg valley – the perfect place to watch the sunset. Or simply take a stroll around the town before heading to your hotel bar for a nightcap.

Lively evenings

Pontresina is a pretty quiet place so there’s not tonnes going on here in terms of nightlife, but the spots that do open late are all close to one another. The swanky wine bar Gianottis is a sophisticated call for an evening vino, or go to Sportbar if you want to grab a grappa or sip a cocktail with some music – it’s open til’ midnight.

Exquisite-looking plates serve up the likes of venison, lobster and monkfish.
