Holidays to Pollensa bring you a clever combination of stylish restaurants, bustling markets and Roman history. All this and a four-kilometre beach down on the coast.
Northern roots
Pollensa's tucked away on the northern tip of Majorca, offering up sweeping mountain and sea views. The place does a really good job of mixing the traditional, cosmopolitan and historic – as you’ll see from the art galleries and Spanish restaurants that mingle with Roman and Medieval ruins. As for a beach, you’ll find one that meets Spain's lofty standards 10 minutes' drive down the road in Puerto Pollensa.
Beach life
Pollensa’s beach is down at the coast, just 10 minutes’ drive away. It’s a huge sandy stretch with warm, shallow water. You might also want to ring the changes with the long sandy beaches of Albercutz and Formentor, both within 20 minutes’ drive. At all three, there’s a good choice of watersports, plus plenty of sunbeds and cafés. You’ll also find diving and sailing centres at Formentor and Puerto Pollensa.
Historical Pollensa
An ancient Roman bridge leads in to Pollensa. And a walk up the steep cobbled main street, Puig de Pollenca, takes you to an old Medieval monastery dating back to 1348 – from here, there are views across the mountains to the Mediterranean beyond. Back in the present day, the town also comes with a couple of contemporary art galleries.
Daytrips around the coast
Alcudia is 15 minutes’ drive away, where the charming old town is circled by grand 14th-century walls. In 45 minutes you can be at the capital, Palma, where the huge Castell de Bellver dominates the skyline and costs three euros to tour. You could also see all of Spain’s famous buildings in one place – the open-air Pueblo Español museum is laid-out like a town, lined with scale-models of Spain’s most famous structures.
