San Sebastian, La Gomera

Holidays to Playa de Santiago centre around a laidback fishing village close to La Gomera’s subtropical forests and its capital, San Sebastian. And with its authentic Canarian restaurants and seafood tapas spots, foodies are in for a treat.

A great base for exploring La Gomera

Playa de Santiago might be a quiet fishing village, but exploring’s firmly on the cards as it’s well placed for seeing the sights of La Gomera – the greenest of the Canary Islands. You can walk through some of its evergreen laurel forests in Garajonay National Park, or tick off its mountain ranges, including Alto de Garajonay, which takes the title of the island’s highest peak. The scenery here also extends to the coastline, which is peppered with pebbly beaches and waterside restaurants. And if you fancy a day of shopping and eating, you’re within easy reach of the capital, San Sebastian.

The best beaches near Playa de Santiago

Playa de Santiago’s calm swimming waters make it the perfect place to cool off between sunbathing sessions on the pebbly shore. If you fancy a change of scenery, you can catch one of the speedy catamarans that take off from the jetty and be at one of two major beaches in just 15 minutes. The first is in Valle Gran Rey, and is famed for its black sand and azure Atlantic Ocean waters. The other is Playa de la Cueva. It’s San Sebastian’s main beach, and is set right next door to the harbour.

Top historical and natural sights near Playa de Santiago

Beaches aside, there’s plenty of sights to tick off on Playa de Santiago excursions. A daytrip to San Sebastian is a must. The capital’s home to La Asuncion church, where Christopher Columbus attended mass before setting off for the New World, and the Columbus Museum, which was once the house where he stayed. When you’ve got your Christopher Columbus history fix, hop on a boat trip along the north coast to Los Organos. This rock formation’s the Canary Islands’ answer to the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland.
