Mojacar holidays

Mojacar Playa, Costa de Almeria

Holidays to Mojacar come in two parts – an ancient hilltop village with old-world charm and a traditional beach resort with miles of unspoilt coastline.

Two-sided resort

Tucked into Spain’s south east corner, Mojacar has two very different sides to it. Inland, there’s the typical Andalusian hilltop village of Mojacar. From a distance, the whitewashed buildings look like sugar cubes sprinkled over the countryside. You’ll find its younger sister, Mojacar Playa, spread out along the sandy shoreline.

Bohemian village

Mojacar is a historical potpourri – Phoenicians, Romans and Greeks have all called it home. But, it’s the Moors who really left their mark, with a castle, pretty squares and a web of cobbled walkways. Years later, the village became an artists’ colony in the Sixties. And today, it still holds onto that same laid-back, hippy vibe – streets house mellow bars, galleries and shops.

Beach town

The good looks extend to the coastline. Mojacar Playa bucks the trend with its low-rise, dove-coloured buildings – a hallmark of the untouched Costa de Almeria, which it sits along. It’s the beaches that turn heads here, though – all 17 kilometres of them. Those near the centre are geared up for families, with parks, bars and cafés lining up behind the sand. Then, there are the footprint-free stretches, where it’s all about stripping things back to basics.
