Holidays to Haria base you in a traditional Canarian village with bundles of character.
The Valley of the Thousand Palms
Haria is a small village in northern Lanzarote, in part of the island nicknamed the Valley of the Thousand Palms. The valley was formed from a series of volcanic eruptions, making it the most fertile area of land in Lanzarote. But that’s not the only reason this area’s so green – according to legend, families who lived here used to plant a new palm tree every time a child was born.
A traditional square
Haria’s palm-speckled streets are lined with whitewashed buildings, giving the village a somewhat Greek appearance. At one end of the central square – León y Castillo – you’ll find the Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation, complete with a short bell tower and traditional cross. The other side of the square’s edged with cafés, shops and a market selling the likes of clothes and souvenirs.
An arty museum
Over in the western end of the village is its main attraction – the Cesar Manrique House Museum. Named after the artist who built it, the museum still looks just like the traditional home it once was. Inside, you can see the rooms and studio where the painter lived and worked in the years before his death in 1992. The studio’s exactly as he left it, with half-finished paintings still propped up on their easels.
Views for days
With its spot close to lofty volcanoes, Haria’s within easy reach of some of Lanzarote’s best viewpoints, like Mirador Rincón de Haría – 10 minutes’ drive away. This mountainside spot lines up sweeping views of the rugged, untouched shoreline. Plus, you can reach Mirador la Caldera in 20 minutes – from here, you get more bird’s-eye vistas of volcanic beaches and dramatic rock formations.
