Bratislava holidays

Grassalkovich Palace, Bratislava, Slovakia

With a snow-white castle and the River Danube running through its centre, Bratislava city breaks are tinged with romance.

Bratislava city breaks

Slovakia’s compact capital city spans the centuries with its old-and-new appeal. Make a beeline for the old town, where gold crowns studded into the pavement mark the city’s church-filled Coronation Route. Ornate opera houses and a turquoise-tinted Art Nouveau church are among the signature sights, too. Bratislava Castle’s the biggest head-turner here though, while the UFO Bridge over the River Danube is one of the more modern additions to the skyline.

Ancient icons

Bratislava Castle’s the standout sight here – you can see it from practically anywhere in the city, thanks to its hilltop spot beside the Danube River. It’s been keeping watch over the waterway and the pumpkin-coloured rooftops of the old town since the 9th-century, and with its snow-white stone and terracotta turrets, it scores highly in the style stakes, too.

Modern marvels

At the modern end of the scale, the UFO Bridge has been a big draw here since the early 1970s. Its official name is Most Slovenského národného povstania, but its affectionate nickname comes from its flying saucer-shaped observation deck. Head up here for city views and a restaurant dishing up local specialities like dumplings.

Danube river cruises

Lots of our Danube river cruises make a stop here – after all, Bratislava’s sliced in two by Europe’s second-longest river. The ships dock right in the city centre, so it’s really easy to get to the main sights. You can then hop back onboard and venture towards neighbouring Austria and Hungary, where the likes of Vienna and Budapest are on the cards.

Shopping

Bargain buys

Head to the Central Market or the open-air stalls on Mileticova Street for some of the best bargains. You’ll find lots of local gifts and traditional food stalls dotted around. There are a handful of second-hand shops around Kamenne namestie too, if you’re feeling thrifty.

Mid-range buys

Obchodna Street is the city’s lively main shopping street. Alongside local shops, you’ll find plenty of familiar high-street brands from back home, like H&M and Deichmann.

Designer buys

Laurinska Street and Gorkeho Street are in the heart of the city, and they’re both known for their high-end fashion boutiques. Think Gucci, Burberry and more.

Nightlife

Laid-back evenings

With its wine bars, cosy craft beer pubs, and café-bars tucked into narrow streets and historic cellars, the old town’s got plenty of places for a relaxed night out. Head to the town square – Hviezdoslavovo namestie – for some of the most laidback spots. Venturska Street’s another popular spot for chilled evenings.

Lively evenings

For livelier nights out, the old town’s still the place to go, but at the opposite end to Hviezdoslavovo namestie. Streets like Obchodna and Michalska come to life at night, when youngsters flock to their buzzing bars, cocktail lounges, and late-night clubs.

Food & drink

Bryndzove halusky

Often considered Slovakia’s national dish, these small potato dumplings are mixed with bryndza – a creamy cheese made from sheep’s milk. The dish is usually topped with crispy bacon bits and a little bacon fat, making it a hearty and comforting winter warmer.

Kapustnica

This traditional sauerkraut soup’s eaten year-round, but it’s especially popular at Christmas. It’s packed with smoked meat, sausage, mushrooms, and spices like paprika and caraway, with a tangy, smoky flavour.

Zemiakove placky

These potato pancakes are made from grated potatoes, garlic, flour, and marjoram, then fried until golden and crispy. They’re crunchy on the outside, soft inside, and often eaten on their own or as a side dish with meat or sauerkraut.

Pirohy

These dumplings come with sweet or savoury fillings – usually jam or bryndza. The sweet ones are usually topped with powdered sugar, while the savoury version’s finished off with butter and bacon.

Lokse

These thin potato flatbreads are traditionally baked and brushed with fat. They can be served savoury style and wrapped around duck or goose with cabbage. Or, you can opt for a sweet version, which is spread with poppy seeds or jam.
