This chic, adults-only hotel enjoys one of Funchal’s most coveted locations, just footsteps from the old town waterfront.
Hotel Porto Santa Maria is one of the few hotels right on the promenade of Funchal’s old town, so you’ve got lots of traditional restaurants on one side and Atlantic Ocean views on the other.
The hotel’s a 10-minute walk to the centre of Funchal, plus you’ve got the cable car close by. A lake-like pool overlooks the ocean, and there are a couple of restaurants serving international and Madeiran dishes.

Heaven on earth
Everything from the taxi waiting for you at the airport to the siting of the hotel is wonderful. We have found ourselves drawn to the place twice a year! Highly efficient front of house and brilliant breakfasts and restaurant staff. The hotel dinners are remarkably good, but there is very many good little restaurants within literally a few yards of the door . The aircon works! Seaview rooms will knock your eyes out . Not for children but great for everyone else (gym and pools).More

We have stayed at this wonderful hotel so many times we have lost count. It is a fabulous hotel with amazing staff many who have been there all the years we have we have been staying here and without exception are so helpful and friendly, nothing is too much trouble. We wouldn't consider staying anywhere else. The location is perfect with the cruise liners coming so close to the hotel you can pick up their WiFi from our balcony ! We feel so valued as guests when we stay and we are so looking forward to our next visit which is very very soon .More
Hotel is quite nice, most staff friendly, excellent housekeeping, excellent restaurant staff. Front desk, not as friendly. Free wifi, good breakfast. Pet peeve is that they charge you to use the room safe... ridiculous, and told me all hotels do this. Not sure after I have visited over 100 countries I would agree.. this is my only complaint... also some rooms better than others, with better views.More
Fabulously Located for Exploring Funchal
This hotel is rated as 4 star, it is located right on the sea front promenade to its front, and the old town and it’s restaurants to its rear. We have stayed in one of its partner hotels twice before, this particular hotel is very pleasant, but we did find lots of silly little extras were charged for both in the rooms, such as sachets of tea/coffee not topped up after arrival, and omelettes for breakfast. On the plus side the rooms were clean n tidy, well maintained and spacious. Staff are helpful and attentive. The bar staff work particularly hard especially when drinks are half price 6pm - 7.30pm each evening. The buffet breakfast is plentiful with a wide range of produce available that is fresh and well presented. If you want to use the spa, I recommend you book early as there only appears to be one therapist working. The complex is quiet on the whole, other than the odd ‘deaf’ guest finding the need to shout when conversing there is no disturbance or noise from other rooms. We will stay here again when we next visit MaideraMore
A lovely hotel
Last year, visiting Funchal for the first time, we stayed in a hotel on the outskirts of the town. It was a great hotel but Porto Santa Maria is really special. Best of all is its position, right on the sea front, with views over the sea, and close to the town centre. From the hotel you can walk along the stunning promenade and you are close to restaurants and a short walk to the old town, to the cable car and to local buses. We found the hotel very peaceful, with a lovely garden. We found the outdoor pool quite small, but in contrast we loved the indoor pool, which has access to the outside too. We enjoyed breakfast which had provided a good range of food, but we chose to go to local restaurants in the evening which provided delicious meals. We stayed in a junior suite which was very comfortable and spacious, and looked out over the cruise ships, but all the rooms seemed nice. The staff were courteous throughout the hotel and we would be very happy to return to the hotel.More
