Perast, Kotor Bay, Montenegro

Kotor holidays can be as varied as you like – from lazy beach days to scenic strolls around the Medieval old town.

Variety-packed town

A Medieval old town, secluded beaches, mountainous backdrops, Venetian palaces. This cosy coastal town certainly doesn’t fall into the one-size-fits-all category, and it’s one of Montenegro’s holiday up-and-comers. Kotor’s good looks and history jump out when you come here. The latter’s backed up by a UNESCO World Heritage stamp for the old town, as well.

Cool for cats

For all its good looks and centuries-old buildings, the first thing you’ll probably notice when you step into the old town’s Medieval walls are the hundreds of cats that call Kotor home. How they got here’s unknown, although one of the more widely believed theories is that sailors brought them on their ships in the early 20th century and the moggies never left. Either way, they’ve become as much a part of the town as any of the sights that have stood for centuries – there’s even a cat museum and cat-themed souvenir shops dotted around town.

A town rebuilt

You wouldn’t think it from the appearance nowadays, but a fair chunk of Kotor’s old town was severely damaged by a huge earthquake back in the late 1970s, including the city walls and four Romanesque churches. Thankfully, with the help of UNESCO, they’ve all been fully restored, and the old town’s had World Heritage approval ever since.

Tucked-away beaches

The town’s neatly nestled in the Bay of Kotor, and cosy, intimate beaches are scattered all over these parts. There are plenty of stretches to choose from within a 30-minute drive, but the nearest one’s much closer to town – just a 10-minute walk away in fact. It’s got an outdoor pool, too, or you can just lie back on the pebbles and take in the mountainous backdrops in every direction.
