Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily

Holidays to Citta Del Mare take you to Sicily's northern coastline, where sea swims and sunbathing are what it’s all about.

A slide to the sea

Citta Del Mare’s a small and scenic area in the north of Sicily, scattered with cacti, olive trees and leafy palms. It’s most famous for is its toboggan waterslides that run from a hotel into the Tyrrhenian Sea. It’s quite an unusual sight – four chutes stood alongside each other, zipping down the side of a cliff. They’re at the CDSHotels Terrasini – one of our recommended places to stay in the area – and thrill-seekers will want to whizz down them again and again.

Library-quiet beaches

The area of Citta Del Mare has quite a rocky coastline, but a five-minute taxi ride will get you to a sandy sweep lapped by glassy blue waters. The closest beach is quiet and calm, with not much around it. If you carry on a little further, you’ll reach the seaside spot of Piano Inferno Marina, where the beach is backed by houses and a couple of restaurants to dine at. There are a few historical towers studding this stretch of coastline, too, if that’s your kind of thing.

Pretty Palermo

If you fancy picking up the pace and having a taste of Sicilian city life, the capital of Palermo’s about 45 minutes’ drive away. It's a historic city flecked with monuments, castles, and churches laced with gold. It’s famous for its top-notch food scene – you won’t go further than a few steps without stumbling across a restaurant or bar serving snacks. Locals love dishes like arancini, which consists of rice balls stuffed with cheese and other toppings, and sfincione, which is a Sicilian style of pizza with a thick, spongy base. You’ve also got plenty of shops and market stalls to browse, making it easy to grab a souvenir or two.
