Holidays to Gallipoli seamlessly blend old and new, and the beaches are among the best in the region.
Town of two halves
Gallipoli’s set at the bottom of Italy’s heel, on the shores of the Ionian Sea. Most of the pointy headland’s kept with the times, so you can expect tree-lined boulevards punctuated by shops and restaurants. Follow the main avenue, though, and you’ll reach an islet which time forgot. This unattached tip’s home to a maze of cobbled streets and classic architecture.
Four-mile beach
This part of Puglia’s got plenty going for it beach-wise, and on the southern side of Gallipoli you’ll find a four-mile sweep of sand. Grass-tipped dunes and beach bars line up behind the seafront, and the gentle waters are ideal for swimming. If you’re after something a little closer to the centre, the old town’s crowned by a half-moon beach.
Historic port
Not to be confused with the infamous First World War battle site, this Gallipoli has its own chapter in the history books. The island part of the town’s still wrapped in stone walls and fortifications, following centuries of plundering and pillaging. And the rabbit warren of lanes within is packed with hidden statues, Baroque churches, and pint-sized piazzas.
