Holidays to Acaya serve up Renaissance architecture, manicured golfing greens and pretty views of tree-studded hillsides.
Renaissance roots
The hub of this pocket-sized village is its castle. It was built back in 1506 by Knight Alfonso of Acaya, in a bid to guard the place during war times. It’s not hard to imagine how useful the castle would’ve been as a safe vantage point – it’s surrounded by lofty walls and a wide moat. Climb to the top of one of its neck-craning towers and you can count the six ruler-straight streets that run through the village, before deciding where to head next. The church of Santa Maria della Neve, with its impressive Neoclassical architecture, is a couple of minutes’ walk away.
