Holidays to Sant'Agnello take you to quiet piazzas and rustic restaurants, and put you within touching distance of charming Sorrento and historic Herculaneum.
Sant'Agnello’s a clifftop town perched midway along the Sorrentine Peninsula. It’s easy to fill your days here, lingering over a plate of pasta, sipping espresso in one of the trendy cafés, or hiking out into the hills that spread for miles around. And away from the peaceful piazzas, you’ve got lively Sorrento just minutes away.
A lift takes you down to Marinella Beach – a popular patch of volcanic sand at the foot of Sant'Agnello’s cliffs. It comes with a large pier, which has sunloungers, umbrellas and easy access to the water. There’s a host of watersports on offer, like canoeing and pedal boats, and children can whizz down waterslides right on the seashore.
The fast Napoli to Sorrento train – which passes through Sant'Agnello station – gets you to Herculaneum in 45 minutes. The town was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in 79AD, and tours through the ruins take you past the mosaics and houses paused in time. Southbound, the train zips you to Sorrento in just two minutes, where must-sees include the Roman ruins at Villa Pollio and the grand 11th-century Basilica di Sant’Antonino. You’ll probably wind up among the popular bars and restaurants of Piazza Tasso, too.
