Bellagio, Italy

Holidays to Bellagio, dubbed the pearl of Lake Como, win the hearts of all who visit thanks to the town's quaint cobbles and impossibly beautiful setting.

Lake views

Bellagio tugs hard on the heartstrings. Stunningly located on a peninsula on Lake Como, at crux of the inverted 'Y' that separates Como from its eastern arm, Lecco, you'll find it hard to put down your camera.

Unbelievable sights

The town is framed by steep mountains, and is home to a rainbow of century-old buildings, where cobble streets connected by winding stairs lead you between postcard pizzias and age-old churches. You can stay in lakefront hotels and eat at authentic restaurants, all while soaking up the lake's famous panorama. During the day, peruse art galleries and antique shops, or walk to the tip of the peninsula for unbeatable views down both arms of Lake Como. Bellagio is arguably the most well-connected town for boat transport, so it's easy to hop on a ferry to visit other towns.

Days of leisure

Make sure to visit the striking gardens of the Villa Melzi, 10 minutes' walk along the promenade from Bellagio. Sprawling over the hillside, the gardens are full of interesting plants and sculptures, and are a wonderful place to find some peace and quiet. Later on, explore the winding steep-stoned stairways to browse shops selling silk, glass and olive wood, or settle down at a waterfront trattoria, where succulent perch and crisp local Soave wines top the menu. Once you're done for the day, take a seat in lakeside bar for a well-earned spritz as the sun goes down.

Beaches

Lido di Bellagio

Five minutes' walk from the centre of Bellagio, you'll find this sandy beach. It's free as long as you rent a lounger, deckchair or gazebo.

Shopping

Bargain buys

Depending on when you visit, you might be able to catch a morning market in the centre of town. Browse for clothes, leather goods, pottery, souvenirs and more.

Mid-range buys

Go window-shopping for handmade shoes, traditional Como silks and delicate glassware. The unique hand-painted bottles filled with wine, oil or vinegar are particularly popular with locals and tourists.

Nightlife

Laid-back evenings

There are a few bars in Bellagio that stay open into the early hours. You should be able to find the perfect secluded spot to sit and enjoy an evening drink.

Lively evenings

Bellagio has a busy summer calendar, with regular sessions from orchestras and live bands, which culminates with the Bellagio festival at the end of August. For music and cocktails, head over to Lido di Bellagio for weekend party nights throughout the summer.

Food & drink

Lakeside restaurants

There are lots of restaurants on the west shore of the lake. If you have the chance, try the traditional Bellagino feast day dish, tóch - ingredients are polenta, butter and cheese. You'll also find chicken, cured meat and dried fish from the lake on the menu.

Sip local wines

This is Italian wine country, and restaurants offer local vintages. One place to seek out is the Enoteca Cava Turacciolo, a cosy bar offering a wide range of local wines in a cellar-style setting.

Getting about

Buses

The only bus stop in Bellagio is right at the end of Lungolario. There are two main bus lines that run between Bellagio and Como.

Passenger ferries

Bellagio's main pier is at Piazza Giuseppe Mazzini, with boats running to many of the most popular villages on the lake, including Menaggio, Cadenabbia and Tremezzo.

Trains

There's a tourist road train that loops around the town. It takes under a hour to do the whole circle, or you can hop off along the way - San Giovanni is around 20 minutes away.

On foot

Bellagio is a place best explored on foot. We're talking mornings spent following cobble streets and climbing curving staircase to discover something new around each corner. If you have limited mobility or need to use a wheelchair, getting around here may be more challenging.

Walking

Walking in town

Cobbled streets and steps lead to Romanesque churches dotted along the main high street, Via Garibaldi. If you prefer being by the water, stroll down towards the Via Roma to watch the boats sail by. Bear in mind, the walk back into town is a little hilly.

The suburbs

Head down towards the pier and turn right onto Via Garibaldi which takes you to the fishing village of Pescallo. The main road is lined with olive trees. If you carry on further, you'll come to Guggiate, with cypress-framed views of the lake.
