Summer is a special time to visit the UNESCO-protected Dolomites, where jagged peaks rise above flower-filled valleys and every trail leads to something remarkable. Step into paradise

Walkers, hikers, climbers and cyclists flock to the Dolomites throughout the year, to get lost in its natural wonders. Whatever your fitness level, you’ll find something to excite you – whether that’s taking a gentle stroll through flower-filled meadows, or traversing one of the renowned alte vie, the high altitude paths that can take up to two weeks to complete fully. All the walking routes are well marked and well maintained, so you can forget your worries and just enjoy the scenery. There’s nowhere around here that doesn’t have an amazing view, and you never have to go far to feel like you’ve completely escaped from the modern world.

Cultural melting pot

The area sure has an interesting history – and this makes for an even more interesting blend of cultures today. Originally Austrian, it became part of Italy after WWI. The Dolomites were also historically home to the Ladin people, and they still have a big presence, so it’s not uncommon to hear all three languages being spoken and all three cuisines on offer in local restaurants. Even the towns and villages often have three names. Confusing? Maybe. But it sure is fascinating. Get stuck in by visiting local museums to learn about the history and folklore; sampling regional specialities in the many cafés and pastry shops; and just wandering the picture-book villages, chatting to the friendly locals.

Beaches

Alpine waters

The mountainous Dolomites aren't brimming with lakes, but depending where you stay, there'll be somewhere to top up your tan and paddle in a freshwater lagoon. Levico Terme is your best bet, as a short walk away from the town you'll find the glorious Norwegian fjord-like Lake Levico.

Levico's lovely beach

On the south-eastern shores of the water, by the camping village, you'll find a bustling beach that's perfect for spending the day splashing about in one of the cleanest Italian lakes. The public lido is bordered by bushy trees, and has stunning views of the mountainous landscapes. Set up camp for the day on the various grassy areas, or if you want to be part of the action, the jetty has the easiest access to the water. If watersports are your thing, you can even hire pedalos, kayaks and paddle boards to help you explore the lake.

Beaches at altitude

The higher-up resorts don't tend to have many lake-bathing facilities, but if you're on a mountain walk you may come across one or two peaceful lakes that you can take a dip in. Lago Ritorto, near Madonna di Campiglio, is a beautiful UNESCO-protected lake with lots of places to stop and watch the world go by. Take a picnic and enjoy the views.

Bargain buys

Local markets are commonplace in many of the villages that populate the Dolomites, with everything from fruit and veg to handmade gifts on offer. Levico Terme hosts a market twice a month, and Borgo Valsugana, just down the road, holds one every week. Val Gardena also has markets in abundance - Santa Cristina, Selva and Ortisei set up stalls on different days of the week, so you can visit them all.

Mid-range buys

Pick up a swimming costume or get ready for winter with a woolly jumper at one of the specialised fashion stores, or try on a pair of walking shoes at the local cobbler. Local wood carvings, handmade bags and even food gifts are available to purchase from the high street of the gorgeous Selva Val Gardena.

Designer buys

For high-quality shopping, visit Madonna di Campiglio. Independent shops carry some of the best Italian clothing brands around, while jewellery shops glisten with precious stones. Got a love for vintage and antique goods? You're bound to find something to your taste here. If you can't find what you're looking for, then take a wander down to either Pinzolo or Val Rendena for lots more high-end retail therapy.

Nightlife

Laid-back evenings

The Dolomites' mountain towns are perfect for quiet nights. You can sit down and relax at a local bar with a glass of wine and some nibbles, or simply head downstairs to the hotel bar for a post-dinner drink before bed. The lido on Lake Levico has a lovely tiki-style bar that's perfect for watching the sun set over the water, with a cocktail in hand.

Lively evenings

The villages and towns in the Dolomites aren't know for their party nightlife, especially in the summer months, but that doesn't mean you won't find a lively atmosphere in each and every one of them. Throughout the summer they play host to a multitude of music and cultural festivals - the Blues Festival in Levico consists of live street music and dancing, while the Sounds of the Dolomites, found in both Madonna di Campiglio and Val di Fassa, is a classical music festival with performances from a range of internationally renowned artists and orchestras. If you're in the mood for a party though, Val di Fassa's Hexen Klub is the ideal place for a boogie.
