A bit of authentic Zakynthos

Tucked away in leafy countryside, Amoudi is a sleepy little village on the east coast of Zakynthos. The greenery runs right up to the small beach and there are a handful of waterside restaurants up on grassy dunes. In the village, there are a few more tavernas along the village’s only road. You’re covered for idyllic quiet beaches and rustic eateries here – and for everything else there’s the lively duo of Alykes and Alikanes just up the road.

Beaches on the east coast

Amoudi’s sand-and-shingle stretch is a classic of the village beach genre. There are a few sunloungers and umbrellas, but most locals just grab some shade under the pine trees that line the shore. A few shack restaurants sit back from the beach, and there’s shallow turquoise water to wade in. It’s all very laid-back here – but livelier beaches with lots of watersports are 5 minutes’ drive up the road at Alykes and Alikanes.

Daytrips to Zakynthos Town

The capital of the island is just 25 minutes’ drive away. Everything seems to shoot off from Solomos Square there, with the huge statue of Dionysios Solomos right in the middle of it. He was the 19th-century Zakynthian poet who wrote the Greek national anthem. Just over the road is the 17th-century Renaissance-style Saint Nicholas of the Mole Church. And around the corner is the Byzantine Museum, home to opulent 15th-century wall frescos.
